Simple behaviours for how we put safety first

Golden Rules logo is a green circle held by an outstretched hand, containing a leaf, a bag of sugar and a heart. It reads Golden Rules: Environment, Quality, SafetyBehind every bag of our sugar is a team of people working hard to refine it safely, responsibly and with care. That’s why last year we introduced our Golden Rules, a clear set of behaviours that guide how we protect our colleagues, deliver high-quality products and look after the environment.

The Golden Rules apply to everyone across our sites and are rooted in the belief that the right decisions, made every day, protect ourselves and the people around us.

Our Golden Rules are built around three areas:

Safety

We aim to protect the environment and our communities by preventing pollution and ensuring sustainable practices.

We protect our products and our customers through integrity, accuracy and consistent standards.

We protect our colleagues by looking out for one another, following safe ways of working and preventing serious injuries.

Within each area are around five practical behaviours that set clear expectations for how we operate responsibly. While the details differ, every Golden Rule has the same principles at its core: being proactive, staying alert and speaking up when something doesn’t look right.

Every day, the choices made across our operations can have a direct impact on people’s safety. The Golden Rules help ensure those choices are made thoughtfully, transparently and responsibly.

Mat Kennedy, our Safety Manager, highlights the importance of the Golden Rules:

“I see every day how the right choices make a real difference. Our Golden Rules are not about paperwork – they are simple, practical behaviours that help us recognise risk, take responsibility, and look out for one another.

When we follow them, we create safer workplaces, stronger teams and the confidence to speak up.

Safety is built through everyday actions, and the Golden Rules give us a clear, shared way of putting safety first so everyone can go home safe at the end of the day.”
