Tate & Lyle Sugars continue to push for more sustainability in the industry with the introduction of two brand-new 100% electric Volvo lorries.
To reach our ambitious goal to be carbon neutral in London by 2040 in our scope 1 & 2 emissions, we are focusing in the short to mid-term on a combination of ambitious operational efficiency and renewable energy projects.
After a successful pilot project where an electric truck saved 1.125 tonnes of CO2 emissions at tailpipe compared to the regular diesel vehicle, we have invested £1M in our fleet, by introducing two new electric lorries from Volvo, to deliver our quality product to key customers in and around London.
The two new electric trucks now play a significant role across our logistics network, saving 55,000 diesel miles annually, roughly the distance of driving from London to Sydney and back, twice.
One truck, a 4×2 configuration, transports finished sugar and syrup products from our Thames Refinery to external storage facilities. The second truck, a larger 6×2 model, transports products between our Thames Refinery and Plaistow Wharf factory, and to customers across London.
By eliminating combustion engines, they produce zero nitrogen oxide (NOX) or particulate matter emissions at tailpipe, both of which are major contributors to air pollution. They are also significantly quieter than combustion engines, thereby improving air quality and reducing noise pollution for our local community.
An electric charging station has been installed at the Thames Refinery, ensuring these vehicles remain ready to roll. Wrapped in Tate & Lyle and Lyle’s Golden Syrup branding, they are unmistakable on roads in and around London.
“The new trucks are not only fleet additions, but they are also symbols of progress, sustainability and a shared promise to future generations. They lead the way with every silent, 100% electric delivery.” Matthew Whitwell, Head of Logistics and Customer Services, Tate & Lyle Sugars.
